The goal of a self harm reduction kit is harm minimisation.
Struggling with emotional dyregulation is no small feat.
People may use self harm to feel something, to distract from mental pain or release their emotional turmoil.
To curve strong impulses to harm oneself physically or do something they may later suffer greatly with, self harm reduction kits contain objects that catch attention and distract from the current crisis at hand.
It may be enough, or a tool to use whilst receiving support.
Self harm reduction kits are also good for grounding and practicing mindfulness through the senses, bringing people back into their own body.
Who needs this and can I make one?
You don’t need to struggle with self harm to use a self harm reduction kit.
If you feel you need to be reminded to stay in the moment, a way to soothe yourself or something in between getting support this could be an idea to try.
Examples:
Fishermans friends losenges
Sour candy
Ice packs
Fidget toys
Stress balls
Reminders for yourself
Printouts of mental exercises
Essential oils
Rubber bands
Red marker
Journal
Please note these are coping skills and tools used for aid and should never be a substitute for mental health support.
